Construction Begins on State-of-the-Art Motocross Track

POSTED ON April 14th  - POSTED IN Motocross, News

Officials at the New Heartland Park Topeka announce that construction has begun on a new, state-of-the-art motocross facility on northwest corner of the facility’s property. Dirt work began on April 12 and construction of the basic track layout is expected to take 10 to 15 days to complete.

“We are very excited to add another motorsports element and race track to this great facility,” says Scott Gardner, president of the New Heartland Park Topeka. “Motocross is very popular, both from a racer and spectator standpoint. It’s a great family sport and having a brand-new motocross race track here at the New Heartland Park Topeka will bring even more racers, spectators and enthusiasts to Topeka.”mx343logo

The motocross track was designed and being constructed by Tracy Freeman of MX343 LLC Track Building out of Osawatomie, KS. The outdoor style MX track will have everything needed to attract racers from all over the Midwest and eventually bring riders from coast to coast as it gains recognition.

“The track itself will be fun for all skill levels and have a wide variety of obstacles like tabletops jumps, doubles, whoops, scrubs and much more,” says Freeman. “Supporting the track will be plenty of parking, bathrooms, camping and full concessions. Motocross is a great spectator sport and this track design will be spectator friendly with some great vantage points. We plan on filling the stands with motocross fans and all motor sport enthusiast’s alike.”

A full AMA-approved, 42 rider starting gate will be installed and a schedule for practice and race dates are in the works. The summer of 2016 schedule will be introductory and a full 2017 race schedule be planned for next year. Racers and fans are asked to watch the New Heartland Park Topeka’s website and Facebook page for more detailed information and schedules as they are developed.

The New Heartland Park Topeka Dirt Track Ready for Sunday Practice

POSTED ON April 8th  - POSTED IN B-Modified, Dirt Track, Factory Stock, Modified, News, Pure Stock, Sport Compact

Everything has to have a beginning. This Sunday, April 10th at 2 PM the New Heartland Park Topeka will see action on the dirt track for the first time in almost two years.

A new staff is in place, a new sanctioning body (IMCA) will be ushered in
and a new ownership group is ready to watch the dirt fly Sunday!

“Since we sat down with Chris Payne back in January and started talking
about this, John Lowrey and I have been excited,” said co-promoter,
Larry Lowrey Jr., “Heartland Park Topeka is a first rate race facility and
we wanted to be a part of that and so do a lot of others.”

“As Sunday’s practice gets closer we know that there has been a lot of
work done and yet still a lot of work left to do,” said Lowrey, “Bernie
Schmidtlein and his crew have been working non-stop on the dirt track. “The Schmidtlein crew had a difficult task of getting the track back into shape,” explains Lowrey Jr. “They did a masterful job and got it done in quick fashion and now
the job falls on the shoulders of the Reed Bros. (Ronny & Donny) to get
the track race ready! We feel that we are in good hands.”

IMCA racers in 4 divisions will make their debut on Sunday afternoon. This
year’s weekly classes for the Big Time Bail Bonds Sunday Night Showdown
will be made up of IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Northern Sport
Mods and IMCA Hobby Stocks. A schedule of 14 points races and 1 special
event at the end of the season will make up the 2016 slate.

Nearly 50 drivers have preregistered for the upcoming season with more
still to come.

Fans can expect to see a lot of great dirt track racing back in the Topeka area once
again this season. Three IMCA Tracks within a 60 mile radius could
possibly bring some new faces into the area as drivers will look to
accumulate state, regional and national points.

“I don’t think this Sunday can get here fast enough,” said Lowrey Jr., “There
are a lot of unknowns about the upcoming season but when the race cars hit
the track we know we are headed in the right direction.”

Sunday’s practice will see the pit gate open up at 2 PM. All pit passes
are $15.00 and drivers must have their IMCA License to participate.

This weekend’s practice is free to the general public in the grandstands.
The spectator gates will open up at 2:30 PM. There will be no on-site concessions
on Sunday.

On-track action will begin at 3 PM and will run until 6 PM

During the practice, drivers can register for the upcoming season and
purchase a pit stall. Tech will be available. Racers may also use up any
old tires they have in stock during the practice. However, on opening night, only the IMCA Hoosier tire will be allowed.

Heartland Park Topeka is located at 7530 S.W. Topeka Blvd, Topeka, KS. Racers must use Gate X and spectators are asked to use Gate A.

No Major Changes Planned for 2016 Bracket Racing Series

POSTED ON March 31st  - POSTED IN Drag Strip, News

In light of the recent change in management at the New Heartland Park Topeka, at this time, the team is not planning to make any major changes with the previously posted bracket structure and race dates.

“Many racers have planned their race schedule and other activities for the season and making wholesale changes in the bracket program at this point doesn’t make a lot of sense” said Scott Gardner, president and general manager. “A complete review of the program will take place as time permits with limited changes anticipated in 2016” he added.

Scott and Laura Gardner Named to Executive Management Team at The New Heartland Park Topeka

POSTED ON March 30th  - POSTED IN News

Topeka, March 30, 2016 – Heartland Park, LLC today announced Scott Gardner has been named President and General Manager of Heartland Park Topeka [HPT]. As President and General Manager, Gardner will have a position on the board of directors and will take responsibility for all of the facility’s motorsport venues. Laura Gardner will join the team as Director of Business Operations. The husband and wife team who have managed motorsports venues for over 20 years will begin their positions in April 2016.

As a 30 year veteran of the racing profession, Scott Gardner most recently served as scott-laura_gardner_1200pxPresident of the International Hot Rod Association. He began his racing career as Vice President and Marketing Director of the United Drag Racers Association from 1986 to 1993.  In 1994, he became General Manager of Great Lakes Dragaway in Union Grove, Wisconsin, a position he held for 2 years.  When the opportunity arose, he and his wife, Laura, purchased Cordova Dragway Park in Cordova, Illinois.  He was Manager of CDP until he became IHRA President in 2014.

Laura was Operations Manager at Cordova Dragway Park from 1995 to 2015.  After the Gardners sold the track to IRG Sports + Entertainment™ in 2015, Laura became Director of Human Resources for that company.

Under the Gardners’ leadership, Cordova Dragway Park grew in both racer and fan base with successful event concepts and implementation. “Being President of IHRA was a great opportunity to work with racers, track operators and sponsors that have led to many relationships that will last a lifetime,” said Scott.

Both Gardners are motivated in this next step in their careers. Scott commented, “Laura and I have received several management inquiries, but have been selective with our next step. The HPT ownership team’s commitment is extraordinary with an extensive background in the local business environment.”

The Gardners are prepared for the challenges ahead but are looking forward to a successful year for HPT. Scott continued, “We are essentially starting from the ground floor with a facility that was closed much of 2015.  The potential is off the scale with multiple racing venues and other opportunities for a motorsports complex of this magnitude.”

Laura noted, “Teamwork will be essential in creating an environment that thrives for our customer base; the racers, the fans and sponsors. It’s my goal to create a structure that is organized and efficient at HPT.” She is ready to hit the ground running to put together the best team to operate the complex. “As Director of Business Operations, I will use my skills and experience in building a high caliber team that is efficient and effective for HPT.”

Chris Payne, from Shelby Development, LLC, the new owners of Heartland Park Topeka said, “Co-owner, Todd Crossley and I are excited to be teaming up with such experienced and qualified individuals as Scott and Laura. We are confident turning over the control of Heartland Park and its multi-racing venues to the Gardners, allowing them to propel the facility to a much higher level of success.”
