Everything has to have a beginning. This Sunday, April 10th at 2 PM the New Heartland Park Topeka will see action on the dirt track for the first time in almost two years.
A new staff is in place, a new sanctioning body (IMCA) will be ushered in
and a new ownership group is ready to watch the dirt fly Sunday!
“Since we sat down with Chris Payne back in January and started talking
about this, John Lowrey and I have been excited,” said co-promoter,
Larry Lowrey Jr., “Heartland Park Topeka is a first rate race facility and
we wanted to be a part of that and so do a lot of others.”
“As Sunday’s practice gets closer we know that there has been a lot of
work done and yet still a lot of work left to do,” said Lowrey, “Bernie
Schmidtlein and his crew have been working non-stop on the dirt track. “The Schmidtlein crew had a difficult task of getting the track back into shape,” explains Lowrey Jr. “They did a masterful job and got it done in quick fashion and now
the job falls on the shoulders of the Reed Bros. (Ronny & Donny) to get
the track race ready! We feel that we are in good hands.”
IMCA racers in 4 divisions will make their debut on Sunday afternoon. This
year’s weekly classes for the Big Time Bail Bonds Sunday Night Showdown
will be made up of IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Northern Sport
Mods and IMCA Hobby Stocks. A schedule of 14 points races and 1 special
event at the end of the season will make up the 2016 slate.
Nearly 50 drivers have preregistered for the upcoming season with more
still to come.
Fans can expect to see a lot of great dirt track racing back in the Topeka area once
again this season. Three IMCA Tracks within a 60 mile radius could
possibly bring some new faces into the area as drivers will look to
accumulate state, regional and national points.
“I don’t think this Sunday can get here fast enough,” said Lowrey Jr., “There
are a lot of unknowns about the upcoming season but when the race cars hit
the track we know we are headed in the right direction.”
Sunday’s practice will see the pit gate open up at 2 PM. All pit passes
are $15.00 and drivers must have their IMCA License to participate.
This weekend’s practice is free to the general public in the grandstands.
The spectator gates will open up at 2:30 PM. There will be no on-site concessions
On-track action will begin at 3 PM and will run until 6 PM
During the practice, drivers can register for the upcoming season and
purchase a pit stall. Tech will be available. Racers may also use up any
old tires they have in stock during the practice. However, on opening night, only the IMCA Hoosier tire will be allowed.
Heartland Park Topeka is located at 7530 S.W. Topeka Blvd, Topeka, KS. Racers must use Gate X and spectators are asked to use Gate A.
